History of the American Subcontractors Association

American Subcontractors Association, Inc. (ASA) is a non-profit trade association representing subcontractors, specialty trade contractors and suppliers - the heartbeat of the construction industry.

Founded in 1966, the national association serves more than 5,500 member companies through a nationwide network of 52 local and state chapters.

ASA members work in electrical, mechanical, drywall, steel, masonry, concrete, plumbing, roofing, excavating, painting and nearly every other specialty trade in the construction industry. Members are also suppliers to the construction industry such as insurance, consulting & materials - almost every construction industry need is represented.

ASA members are both union and non-union. More than half of the members have been with ASA for six or more years. Nearly half of the members have between 11 & 50 employees. More than 70 percent have an annual sales volume over $3 million with 25 percent over $15 million.

ASA members range in size from the smallest private firms to the nation's largest specialty contractors. They represent the most accomplished specialty trade contractors in the business. All are concerned with improving the industry and receiving prompt payment for work properly performed. They are united in the ideal of ethical and equitable business practices, professionalism, a safe and healthy work environment and membership diversity.

The association strives to inform others of the fact that subcontractors perform more than 80 percent of all industrial and commercial construction. With its headquarters located near Washington, D.C., ASA is able to represent the interests of its members directly before U.S. Congress, federal departments and regulatory agencies.

ASA is unlike any other organization you may know about or belong to: No where else will you find others so willing to stand up for specialty contractor rights. No where else can you get so much timely, authoritative information. No where else can you come face-to-face with so many people who are working to change today's construction industry.
